Tanzania 2013
On
the 12th of September 2013 Henru and I started a 3 weeks journey to
Tanzania and Malawi. We didn’t know each other and have met only once before.
Just two weeks before, I came back from a two week outreach in India and
Pakistan. I had very little time to prepare for this outreach! Two friends said
they wanted to come with me to Tanzania. Henru met them two weeks before we
left for Tanzania at a soaking evening at a local church here in Pretoria.
Henru
is from Brits and visited the church for his first time. During their night of
worship, Henru received Word from the Lord about Malawi. The friends informed
him about our trip to Tanzania and Malawi,Henru immediately wanted in. Monday,
the 9th we got together for our first meeting. This is where I met
Henru. None of us had a cent or anything yet for this outreach, but I had
confirmation from the Lord that we should go. And that was enough!
Unfortunately
the other two friends couldn’t make it with us this time.Henru and I got our
air tickets and all the arrangements were done within that week! We were on
your way to meet a friend, Michael Mafie. Michael work for WAC (Win it all for
Christ Ministries). Michael and I have been building a relationship for over a
year over the internet and the time came for us to visit Tanzania, also a
nation that has been in our prayers for some time. During 2012 I was part of
the MIA2012 movement where we send teams on outreaches all over southern
Africa. One of the teams went to visit
Michael and the feedback was very positive. We kept in communication ever since
and then September 2013, the time was ready for us to meet Michael and his team
in person. The idea of the outreach was to minister as much as possible but
also to lay the foundations for the future. And to see the possibility of
taking teams there in the future to minister or assist Michael in whatever way
necessary or possible.
Michael
wanted to show us as much as possible of the work that WAC is doing. This meant
a lot of travel! We will travel to Songea in the south, Dar Es Salaam in the
east, Arusha in the north and two villages in the west; ministering at most
places for two days before heading on. The schedule was tight, but the
adventure that would change our lives forever lay ahead of us.
We
started our journey by flying from Johannesburg direct to Dar Es Salaam. We
were greeted and welcomed by Michael Mafie and his associate George. It was a
honour to finally meet Michael in person and we were full of excitement and
expectation for the adventure ahead of us. They drove us to our hotel for the
evening. It was quite a nice decent room. We then had lunch with them at the
restaurant. Just returning from India, my stomach just recovered from spicy
food. And sure enough; they ordered for us some pap and meat and it was covered
with the spices! I immediately started praying and sweating! Three weeks away
from home was infront of me and if this was to be the food that we had to eat,
I needed a lot of grace! But the company was very good and Michael also said
that the food was very chilli for them. This was the last time we had spicy
food! :) Michael told us that we had the afternoon and evening to ourselves and
that we need to prepare for the following day. The next morning very early they
will come and pick us up.
And
sure enough, bright and early they arrived at the hotel. African time is not
applicable when it comes to transport! We got on the bus and left for Songea to
the south, myself, Henru, Michael and George. This was challenging! The bus
stopped three times including lunch, for the entire fourteen hour drive. There
were no toilets on the bus and they just didn't care! They only have these
three scheduled stops and that's it! We arrived at Songea and booked into a
hotel. Not as luxurious as the first, but it had everything we needed. We met
with other pastors of Songea and enjoyed dinner with them, getting to know each
other for the conference that’s ahead. In the morning we had a rest and spend
some time with the Lord preparing our hearts for ministry. After lunch we left
for a church in Songea. We learned on our way there that the first missionaries
in Tanzania came through Songea. Songea was the place where the Gospel was
first introduced many years ago. This is also the place where our ministry in
Tanzania began! God is doing a new thing in Tanzania!
The
service was attended by fellow pastors and church leaders. We had an amazing
time with them. I preached about, “Identity in Christ” to them. We had two
sessions in the afternoon with them. It is a blessing that cannot be described
when you see the Holy Spirit touch His people. After the preaching we had a
fire tunnel (where we stood in the form of a tunnel and people walk through the
tunnel. You lay hands on them and trust God to touch them. Powerful stuff!!).
We saw demon manifestationsin a few people but by far the majority of the
people experienced the Holy Spirit. God touched His people and reached out to
them confirming His presence and love for them. What blessed me was when
children walked through. As they enter the tunnel, they will just fell down, touched
by the presence of God. Women and men were in tears as the Holy Spirit came
upon them.
That
evening we started with Henru giving his testimony and then we showed the Jesus
film under the stars to the public. It’s always amazing to witness the crowd interaction
and response as they cheer for Jesus! Afterwards we invited the people to come
to Christ. Two people gave their live to the Lord! Over all we had an amazing
day getting to know the people of Songea. The hospitalityand friendliness of
the people are just amazing! Most of them are well educated and very up to date
with life. It is such a blessing to serve with them!
We
started the next morning with two services. The first session we shared on “Intimacy
with God”. The anointing was amazing and the message flowed right into deep
worship for the Lord. We saw many manifestations of the Holy Spirit and how the
people responded to the Father's love. This was truly special! Henru saw a
vision where ministering angels came and made like a mayor spiral in and around
the room. As they did this all over the building trees started rising and the
trees eventually grew with great cities on top of them. The people in the
cities, together with heaven, were in full celebration on what was busy happening.
The
second session we shared on “The power of testimony”. We trust that all people
have a testimony in their hearts. Afterwards we prayed for the sick. Again many
demonicmanifestations but with that came many deliverance! God also healed
stomach and chest pains and headaches. An old lady was able to bend down again
and touch the ground! This blessedour hearts!
The
church where all this is happening is quite a big church. Within a year and a
half they went from worshipping in the bush to having a big church. And they
are already expanding! Within the next year they are planning to build a bigger
church and add more buildings for training and Sundayschools. The church will
be built in the shape of a cross and construction has already started! We prayed
with the leaders over the ground and God showed and confirmed with a vision of
a large skyscraper. We believe that God is rising up a beacon of light in the
region of Songea and that the church will play a very significant role in this
community. Within a year and a half this area changed from bush to a neighbourhood
that many government officials now call home. Songea plays an important role in
the Kingdom of heaven in Tanzania!
In
the late afternoon sessions we started off with testimonies from the people.
The 1st ladytestified about her chest pain that got healed during the worship.
When she got prayed for in the tunnel it felt like she got taken some place.
The Holy Spirit was in and on her all the time. Another lady was very happy
that her son attended church for the very 1st time. She could she a difference
in him! Another lady felt electricity going through her body even before she
entered into the tunnel. It was the power of the Holy Spirit going throughher!
In
the next session I preached to the leaders and shared aboutthe “Prophetic and
the heartsthat we as leaders need”. There was an awesome anointing and I loved
every second of this session! After a short but powerful worship it was time to
start the last session. The idea was to pour out the Holy Spirit and to release
the gifts of the Spirit. We had an amazingtime! I think the angels couldn’t
wait for me to finish so that the ministry could start! :)
The
Lord showed me a few open people(people that the Lord highlights for us that He
wants to touch), I called them forward and started praying for them. Henru also
called a guy forward for which he had a word of knowledge for. This is when
holy chaos started! We invited everybody to the front who wanted the Holy Spirit.God
was faithful and He poured Himself out on all of them. There were bodies on the
floor everywhere! People shouting glory to God on the top of their voice, women
in tears before God. People just enjoying the presence of their Creator! This
was truly a highlightto end a very blessed stay with new friends and family of
Songea!
The
evening we went to the streets again to show the people a film about a woman
who was literally thrown away by her parents as a child. When she grew up she
ended up working for her mother and later led her entire family to Christ. We
showed the movie ina Muslim neighbourhood. One of the local pastors told the
people about Christ after many technical challenges during the movie. A bit disappointing
but we enjoyed the atmosphereand a bit of relaxation after an amazing day.
On
the 16th we drove 14 looong hours back on the bus from Songea to Dar Es Salaam.
When we reached the city we climbed on bikes with all our luggage and went on
avery adventurous drive! Brother Michael took us to his aunt's house where we
would be sleeping for two nights. We were exhausted after the long drive and
enjoyed a good night’s rest. It’s amazing to experience the hospitality of the
Tanzanian people. They are truly a big blessing!
The
Tuesday morning we spend the morning at the house praying and seeking God. We
got recharged and were all fired up for the afternoons meeting. We have two
sessions with the church leaders of Dar Es Salaam. Not much time, but it’s
enough time for God to do something! And He did!!! I preached on “Identity in
Christ and on His identity”. Aboutthe Kingdom of heaven within us and God's
government. Most of the times completely dwelling from my notes! I love it when
the Spirit takes over! After the sessions we stepped into God and laid our
lives before Him. People started shaking and crying before God. Someeven fell
over without somebody touching them! God moved we felt angels that came to minister
to us; there was just this amazing anointing.
There
after we clothed ourselves with the Name of Jesus. People testified that while
we proclaimed the Name of Jesus, they saw that while we are doing this, we are
proclaiming the Name of the Lord all over Tanzania and how the church is taking
over the country! Another man said that just before we started God reminded him
that if we want to inherit the Kingdom of God, we must become like children.
This encouraged him to participate. The moment he decided this, he felt the
presence of God all over him! Others said the hair on their bodies was all
standing up. It truly was such a holy moment in the presence of our Father! We
could have ended here, but after all off this we felt so bold, we decided to
have a fire tunnelas well! This was probably the most in order fire tunnel
ever, but it is still a blessing to see the Holy Spirit touching the people.
Almost everybody showedsome kind of sign that they are busy having an encounter
with our Creator.
We
had a very, very amazing time with the leaders of Dar Es Salaam. It brings
peace to my heart to know that there is a room full of fierce warriors in Dar
Es Salaam that’s ready to bring the Kingdom to their congregations and
ministries. Who knows where this fire will reach?!
In
the evening we had an open air crusade again showing the Jesus film to the
people. We didn’t attend the show and the local pastors led the service. We
remained in church and enjoyed warm Tanzanian hospitality by being served
dinner and ginger tea. The church where we were at was led by a lady bishop.
She started the church 4 years ago and it quickly grew into not only a bigger
church but also a network of other churches. We got to pray for her while her
son was present. Henru saw a few visions for the church where the church is
anchored by the glory of God and where the church is flooding with His
presence. We prophesied over her and her son. Afterwards the son came to his
mother and asked her how we knew this about him! He definitely had an amazing
experience with God! The next morning we were to leave for Arusha.
We
arrived in Arusha late afternoon after a very long day on the bus. Again ten
hours with a total of three stops. That afternoon we walked the streets of the
city and did some shopping. It was an adventure to walk these streets and
experience a normal dayin an African city. In the spirit I felt for the first
time that we have a battle on our hands. Something just didn't feel right. Our
bodies and souls also started to feel the effect of all these travels. The busses
were a good experience and gave me a chance to just relax with God but it also
took its toll.
We
were tired and enjoyed a short but good night’s rest. The power went out in the
night and none of our phones or equipment could charge. All my notes, my
camera, and communication was suddenly gone!
We
got into a Land Cruiser for a four hour drive to the village where we will
spend the next two evenings. The Cruiser will wait till we are 14 people and
then it will depart. My mood was not so Christian when I woke up. I was tired
and just was not in the mood for anything. But even in this bad attitude God
came and revealed His love for me. The Cruiser that’s supposed to take 14
people couldn't accommodate us so we got a smaller one with just us four as a
team driving together. In many small but very effective things God started
showing that He is with us and that He cares. This strengthened me agreat deal!
The four hours wasn’t four at all but rather most of the day! We had to drive
over sand dunes and very tough African roads. We were eventually dropped next
to the roadat a village and then learned that we had to walk with all our
luggage for another hour. I did not look forward to this!
After
a few minutes we were greeted by four pastors on bicycles. They strapped all
our luggage on their bicycles and pushed the bicycles all the way. We walked
for an hour and a half to the village. The sun was covered with clouds and it
was just the perfect day to walk. This delivered me from my bad attitude! What
an amazing experience! The pastors helped us with our luggage, and we could
just enjoy the breath-taking beauty of African nature!
At
the church we were greeted with wonderful hospitality. They let us take a
shower to first wash up after our walk. The shower was out of a bucket in the
bush covered by only a few branches. The toilet is only a hole in the ground in
a very small house build with mud and sticks. This might all sound different to
what we are used to, but we need to remember that this is how these people
live. The views while taking a shower or visiting the toilet is absolute
spectacular! I loved it!
Then
we had time for lunch. I thought I could eat a lot, but these people are just
in a league of their own! All of us, meaning us four, and all of the local
pastors sit together and then we eat from mutual plates with no cutlery. The
food was divine! It’s humbling to see how the women serve the men. It’s very
strange to us, but if you look at it from their point of view, they actually
have a culture of honour going. The men have so much respect for the women. It’s
not a slave or submission thing for them at all! This is something I still
sometimes struggle to understand. When one look beyond your own culture and
believe systems and just observe, one could actually appreciate their culture
and ways and learn a great deal from them.
These
people live in the bush. They walk two hours just to get water, three times a
day! There’s no electricity, no shops, no western civilisation! We were the
second group of white people to ever visit this area! People mostly live off
the land, or walk for hours just to get some supplies. Mbulu town is an entire
day away with the bicycle. While we were there we were starred at constantly.
Not in a bad way, but smiling shy faces were on us all the time! Most of them
amazed to see a white man for the first time their life!
Although
everything was very peaceful and went well in the natural, in the spirit we
could sense the forces of witchcraft. We were at war!
The
evening we had a service, Michael asked me to not bring a too difficult message
because of the language barrier and that the church is still in early days.
This is important, because we are only there for two days and then we are gone.
Then the pastors might sit with more questions than answers. This is where one
needs the Holy Spirit! How to bring an effective simple message? But still
break open the heavens for them and challenge them to go deeper in the Lord.
The
service itself was quite challenging. Some slept and others starred at the
white man! We also learned that many of them don’t even speak Swaili! This is
the national language. Michael, my translator, could also not speak the local
language! So the crowd response was absolute zero! I asked who wanted to see
more of Jesus in their church and village and no one responded! According to
every intellectual standard, we are busy fighting a lost battle and are wasting
our time. BUT, fortunately our God is more than just intellectual! He is Spirit
and Truth and He never loses! We just needed to press in to Him a bit more and don’t
give up!
After
the service we showed them the Jesus film. Around a standard size home TV (not
a flat screen!) and two giant speakers, a whole village gathered and watched
the film. This is shown by running a small generator. With the generator
running everybody (including us!) charged our phones. This is the only
opportunity they have to do this. While I was waiting for my phone to charge
and they busy watching the movie, God showed me their faces. They have these
traditional colourful cloths the size of bedding sheets that they wrap around
their bodies and faces so that just their faces are standing out. All you could
see was teeth and eyes that look like there are galaxies inside of them as they
shine. It was a picture far beyond description. A picture that needs to be seen,
to believe it. I'm still not too sure if I have seen them through heaven's eyes
or what, but I fell in love with them right there!
The
way they all sat outside in the cold (we were in the mountains) wrapped in
their clothes, some even sharing blankets and the way they enjoyed eachother
and the movie was just unreal! I saw community. I saw love and respect. I saw
deep appreciation. They were seated tightly against each other on wooden
benches and on the ground watching one smallish television with bad quality and
sound, but they were happy! The quality was so bad the one pastor had to explain
every now and then over a microphone what was going on, but all I saw was the
faces of young and old, all smiling together! This humbled me right there and filled
me with tears of love and appreciation. After the film, they showed local
worship DVD’s. The entertainment stopped after one in the morning. I eventually
got in my tent and had a hard nights rest on the floor but with a heart that
was ready and full of joy! After the worship, the people walked through the
bush to their homes; some two hours away.
After
sleeping late and enjoying breakfast, we started with the morning sessions. I
decided to step it up a bit and preached “Identity in Christ and the working of
the Holy Spirit”. As I demonstrated the work of the Holy Spirit, the Spirit
came upon one of the ladies. She just stood there as if in a trance! Then we
went out and laid hands on the people. I’m not too sure what happened, but I
knew we were praying to God and that something was busy happening. So whatever
it is, I know God is good and that I can trust Him! I love it when God does
whatever He wants! He doesn't have to be limited by my understanding,
experiences or knowledge. I want God to be God and to do whatever He wants,
however He wants!
We
then split up into groups and went out to do some street ministry. This meant
walking from farm to farm and go to people’s houses to pray with them. We
visited 4 homes in a matter of almost two hours. Two people gave their hearts
to the Lord! God also healed some people of body pains. We prayed for all the
family and handed them some booklets. Most of them were amazed to just see a
white man in their home! They call us mzungu! One guy we met in the road on our
way back said that he didn’t need Jesus and that we shouldn’t pray for him. But
God showed me that He longs for him, so I started prophesying over him. God
opened his heart and he asked us to pray for him and he wrote his contact
details on a paper so that the church may contact him. God will do whatever and
reach out to us to reveal His love for us! I mean, He send His only begotten
Son!
When
we got back the teams gave their testimonies of what happened. Now remember,
this has never been done before! They reached 16 homes and 52 people. 4 people
gave their hearts to Jesus! The joy was overwhelming! They couldn’t believe the
impact they made! I then bought a short message on how important it is now to
go back and follow up on these people. To build friendships! And they must keep
on doing this kind of outreaches and even plant more churches.
After
the service all the formalities, of thanking, started. In African churches there’sa
lot of formalities, but I love the way they honoureach other. So you sit and
enjoy! They then welcomed us on stage and gave us gifts. There was this one old
pastor who handed out the presents. He was so joyful! I couldn’t help, but
stare at him and appreciate his joy! I later learned he lost his wife last year
and that they were the first believers in this area. He was a real blessing!
They handed us African pots and a homemade sling, like what David used when he
defeatedGoliath. This was special and it made me realise how much one can get
done in a day andform strong friendships in a short time.
In
the evening we showed them a movie again. It was an African movie and I had no
idea what was happening there! But again an entire village gathered together, under
the stars to enjoy each other‘s company. Henru and I shared the gospel with
them. This was Henru's first opportunity to preach. He did an amazing job and it’s
exciting to see how God is using him already. The future looks bright with
young men like him! After the movie they listened to African Gospel music
videos. They danced and then sat and glanced at the TV, then they danced again!
This went on until after midnight! Some of these people had more than an hour
to walk back to their homes in the bush, with only the moon as their light, and
there are hyenas in the area!
We
went back to our tent and passed out after an amazing, successful day. God
showed me a beautiful golden coloured flower, almost like a rose, that opened
up. I knew that we had a breakthrough! The people’s faces confirmed it! So no
matter what the obstacle and how logic it is not to do somethingbe obedient to
God and you will always be victorious!
The
morning had an early start, as we had to gather our belongings and then we prepared
for our two hour walk to where we will get transport to Mbulu town. We enjoyed breakfast
and they loaded ourluggage on their bicycles again. The walking back was a
blessing in disguise. It was uphill and warm! Eventually we reached the main
road in the village where a bus picked us up. Now up to this stage all our bus
experiences were in luxury coaches. This was a bus that looked like a low class
train in India; not so long but full of people! There were people standing
almost on top of each other in the allies. I don’t know how, but we got a seat
at least! People bought all their luggage and even chickens on board! What a
site to witness, even two chickens bound by their feet lying under a seat on a
bus. Not something for the SPCA! We travelled in this bus for two hours on
gravel roads that will shake any car into pieces!
At
Mbulu town we sat and waited to hear from other transport that would take us to
our next destination. After more than an hour’s wait we finally got a vehicle.
It was an old Land Rover. We had to wait for another two hours before we could
depart again. Either waiting for more passengers or something, I don’t know.
There was a new restaurant there where we had lunch while we waited. Then the
time arrived to board our “landie”. I’ve never seen so many people fit into one
car before! How we all got in and out uninjured, is a miracle!
We
arrived at the village called Murray. The church was quite big and was situated
in the mountains. The view was worth a painting! We had lunch again and rested
a bit on the grass. Henru played some soccer with some of the pastors while I
prepared for the services. We were full, and I mean full, of dust!
So
we were invited (forced) to take a bath. In the middle of the village next to
the main road,in a small Wendy house (I don’t know what to call it). You stand
in the mud balancing yourself on the rocks, washing yourself from a basket in a
small room that’s being taken over by spiders and their webs! The toilet was
again just a hole, but this time the floor had long wooden planks. When I stepped
on them, they bent! This was certainly not for the faint hearted!
That
evening we showed the Jesus film. Again a great crowd gathered to sit on the
grass of the hill watching a small standard size telly. In the middle of the
film, they stopped it and invited me to preach. Totally unprepared (but always
prepared!) I preached the Gospel. Many people then came forward for prayer and
salvation. After we prayed for them all we continued the film. Just before the
end, they paused again and one of the local pastors then preached before they
finished the film. Afterwards we again put all our luggage on bicycles and
started our unexpected 30 minute walk to the place where we will sleep.
It’s
amazing to walk under a full moon at 23:30 and still have a full shadow! A
retired bishop opened his house for us. The facilities were clean and we
enjoyed a good night’s rest!
The
day started the same as most of the days, with African time. I learned this
very early in my very short missionary career; either you can get angry or you
can relax and enjoy! So this ensured that we had a very relaxed morning and had
time to spend with the Lord. Breakfast was served and we then walked back to
the church. On our way we met a lady walking with crutches and she was on her
way to church. She was limping real bad and struggled to walk. God lead us to
pray with her. We did! Nothing physically happened, but in her heart something
happened for sure. I think sometimes it's not so much about the physical
healing, but just an act of love that is necessary. The Gospel is easy and
practical; just love!
When
the Sunday morning service started at 1pm we were blessed with various choirs
singing. Last night, God showed me a python. This means that there is something
squeezing the life out of the church. It was religion. Even our moods and
eagerness to minister was just gone. But the second God reminded me about the
snake and I prayed against it. We felt a shift in the atmosphere and our
spirits lifted. We all felt that God wanted to bring life to the church and
pour His Spirit out on them. So this is what I preached! I started off slowly
and laid the foundation of the Gospel.
The
second session continued after some more worship and during that session we
felt something changing in the atmosphere. Many came forward for prayer and we
had opportunity to minister to them. At the end of the service a strong wind
came up and we knew that it’s the beginning of a new day!
All
the church and ministry leaders had lunch together and then we went to the host
pastor's house. Pastor John and his wife Marietha Sule. He is an amazing man
with a very humble spirit. They opened their heart for us and asked us to pray with
them. While we prayed and prophesied over them, our spirits beganto lift and
the Lord renewed us as well! So we will keep on believing for a breakthrough
for them! Theywere the kindest couple! On our way to his house, while we were
walking, Michael shared that his leg was very painful. We prayed a very short
prayer while walking, and God healed him! Healing His peopleis not complicated
at all! The pleasant surprised look on Michael's face said that
somethingdefinitely happened! He immediately began to walk normal and his limp
was gone!
During
the late afternoon we had an awesome but well needed talk with Michael. He
shared his testimony and the history of WAC. The power of a testimony can never
be under estimated! It was amazing, this friendship that formed and developed
during our time in Tanzania. Henru, Michael, George and I travelled for almost
two weeks together during some extremely tough circumstances and through all
this we never had a moment where things between us got ugly. They had so much patience
with us and really made the trip as easy as possible for us. For understandable
reasons, Michael doesn’t share his testimony with anybody, so we were really
blessed by him. He is a true visionary and fire starter. A true asset to the
Kingdom!
When
the night fell together with the temperatures, the moon hidden behind thick
clouds, we started the cinema again. This time we showed a local Tanzanian
movie about a girl who was caught up in drugs and the night life of some young
adults and her story how she met the Lord and how she had to stand strong
through many persecutions for her faith. Even her parents rejected her. She
went from young girl who could do as she pleases, to a house maid that was
being physically abused. But through all this she had a song in her heart and
God turned the situation around and her entire family got born again and she
married one of the young pastors of the church.
They
paused the movie again during the beginning and we had an opportunity to preach
the Gospel. Henru first shared a message of love and laid a solid foundation
for me to build on. One lady came to Christ and in front of a large crowd
confessed Jesus with her mouth. The heaven had a massive party this evening!
The anointing was strong and kept us joyful throughout the cold weather. During
the rest of the movie the Holy Spirit continued what He startedand His presence
was just all over the hill where all of us were seated. Then at the end of the
movie, an elderly man came forward to receive Jesus. Henru lead him in prayer
and tears started rolling over the man's cheeks. This was so special to
witness! I believe it blessed Henru just as much as the man! Every tear praying
a thousand prayers, a lost son found his home again!
Then
a lady came with her baby for prayer. The baby had heart and lung problems.
Henru prayed and then a few soft but firm coughs started coming from the
peaceful baby. It’s not a verified miracle, but God was there and something did
happen! I know God well enough to believe Him like a child for that baby's
healing.
Even
the walk back to our home wasn’t as tough because our spirits was filled with
the joy for the Lord. The following morning we had an early start to get back
to Mbulu and then Arusha.
What
a day! We paid the price and were challenged into the yellow this day. From
Mbulu to close to Mgorogoro crater, we had a 2 hour drive with 16 people in one
standard Land Cruiser on very rough gravel roads. Wethen got into a Toyota Noah.
It’s like a small 8 seater family car. We were 10! 4 of us on each bench. In
our row, Henru and Michael were separated by a rather large African lady. At
one stage she was sleeping on me and I didn’t even sit next to her! This entire
day we were packed like sardines and more! Although this was as close to hell
that I would prefer to come at stages, God remained faithful.
I
won’t say us as causation or they as Africans have it right or wrong, but I definitely
saw another side of the coin! We as westerners are very focused on our own
luxury and comfort. And there’s nothing wrong with it, because it’s just
dangerous and in many countries illegal to overload a vehicle like that. But
what I saw in them had something beautiful in it.
They
suffered just as much as us during all of these travels BUT here is the
difference. We would say to awaiting passengers the vehicle is full and then
move on, leaving people behind to wait for the next opportunity. They know that
there is probably not going to be a next opportunity again soon, so they move
up and make a plan to accommodate all people. And this is beautiful to me!
Putting other people and their needs above your own.Isn’t this what Jesus asks
of us? They understand something about Kingdom Culture that I want to learn
from them!
Back
in Arusha we had to sort out all the admin of the outreach and prepare for the
week ahead of us in Malawi. I finally got in bed just after midnight for a 2
hour night. And as if two hours isn’t short enough, I lay
in bed and couldn’tget mymind to rest. I had all these memories of our time in
Tanzania.
How
old pastors walked and travelled with us most of the way, always helping us
with our luggage and logistics. They always smiled and insisted on carrying our
bags, trying to make us as comfortable as possible. I thought again on all the
hard times while we travelled, and couldn’t connect to any negative emotion
while visualising our adventures but rather a quite joy and deep appreciation
filled my emotions. We had such an amazing and blessed time with the Lord and each
other and the wonderful people of Tanzania. I feel like one of the riches
persons alive because of the memories and friendships we made during our last
13 nights in Tanzania! Thank You Jesus!
